Chapter 21: Caratine’s Letter

A silent paddleboat approached Vyloli City under the cover of nightfall. Dressed in a slick black thermal bodysuit, Sajaelar Molaes quietly jumped from the rowboat to a small drainage opening protruding slightly from the formidable concrete wall which served as protection to Vyloli Island from erosion during storms. He pulled himself upwards, and fit himself snugly into the opening, crawling completely inside.

Sajaelar wore a suit designed by the original Iota Corps. It was created using crystal fiber. The suit was designed to hold tightly to the body, providing protection against extreme temperatures and physical damage, while increasing both strength and stamina. Sajaelar wore a similarly made mask over his face, along with a self-contained breathing apparatus.

The crawl through the pipe was tight, and would drive anyone with claustrophobia mad, but Sajaelar was a sniper. He was used to hiding in tight, cramped spaces for hours on end, waiting for the perfect shot.

He crawled through the drainage pipe to an inlet they hoped would not be guarded, which lay inland half a mile. The inlet was covered with a rectangular grate. Sajaelar popped it open as quietly as he could and squeezed himself through. He entered the building and found himself inside of an old kitchen. It was had definitely seen better days, with its old, moldy linoleum floor.

The York Restaurant was the first commercial restaurant opened in Vyloli City. The restaurant was centuries old and had been modified many times over. The final time it had been modified had been around fifty years ago, and the renovation had included a kitchen remodel as well as a drainage basin to help prevent and dispose of large spills.

Sajaelar tugged at the ties at the back of his black hood and pulled his breathing apparatus off over his face. He took in a few deep breaths through his nose, and then breathed heavily out of his mouth.

“Smells like Lutefisk in here,” he said, regretting breathing through his nose. He pulled his hood off of his head and pressed a button on his inner-ear radio.

“This is Shooter,” he said. “I’m in the city. Two and a half blocks away from the target. I repeat. I am in the city.”

“We hear you, Shooter,” came Raemund’s voice over the radio. “Keep us posted. Commander out.”

Sajaelar reached into a patch on the leg of his suit and pulled out a small black metal rectangle. With a flip of the wrist, a small gun appeared, the same gun that Vai had taken from the assassin, Raven. He crept over to the corner of the kitchen, rounding the metal island in the center of the room, and pressed his back against the wooden doorframe leading outwards to the main sitting area of the restaurant.

He slowly peered around the corner, and saw that the room was clear, though he did notice three decaying bodies in a corner of the main room, all with bullet wounds to the head. As he stepped into the room, he rounded the corners to check for enemies in the areas that he couldn’t see.
